What is the difference between laser film brands?
LaserTape is our original laser mask film and is available in dark green. It offers fast and simple clean up, quick burn, and color-fill capabilities. It has a strong adhesive and normally needs to be soaked in water to get the film off. Stretchy (slightly more pliable) and conforming but will retract overtime.
BLazer orange has a repositionable adhesive and more ideal for color fill applications. This film is best removed without soaking in water. It is stretchy but it retains shape overtime so it is more ideal for compound curves. It turns a slightly darker color when in contact with the substrate, does not leave a residue, is easy peel and has a higher resolution. It is capable of a deeper blast than LaserTape.
Laser THICK film is our most durable film yet and offers all the standard qualities, plus the ability to get the deepest etch.
What substrates can laser film be used on?
Laser mask can be used on all laser engravable substrates, but is highly recommended for use with glass and crystal.
Laser film can be used when engraving to prevent scorch marks and cracking, but also allows for color-filling and a sandcarved finish. Finishing engraving with a sandcarver provides depth and dimension as well as creating a smooth and uniform finish.
Laser film is simple to use. Apply, laser engrave, sandcarve to desired depth and optionally color-fill. Once finished, simply peel the used mask away from the substrate. Refer to each laser mask products’ user guide for detailed instructions.
Where can I learn to use laser film with laser engraving and sandcarving?
IKONICS Imaging offers Blazering classes at various tradeshows and in conjunction with GS2 Awards and Trotec Laser Engraving. These classes are offered at various times throughout the year. Check our Events Page for upcoming classes.
Sandcarving after laser engraving produces a superior product. Sandcarving allows for deep carve options and dimensional carving while providing a uniform and smooth finish.
All laser mask films produced by IKONICS Imaging are compatible with color-filling.
Stage carving can be done after laser mask film is engraved with the use of a sandblast cabinet.
Carving depth is determined by the thickness and durability of the mask used. Please refer to the product user guide for depth recommendations. Laser THICK film is our most durable laser mask film and offers deep carve capabilities.
Apply masking material to your substrate and follow your laser engraver's recommended settings. Once mask is laser engraved, it is ready to sandcarve.
Laser Mask film is compatible with CO₂ lasers, with optimal results achieved at 40 watts or higher. If using a diode, fiber, or UV laser, testing is recommended to ensure compatibility.
Our laser mask film products are clean burning and safe to use in your laser engraver if used according to the user guide.
Masking tape is hard to apply, doesn’t come in as wide a format, and can leave a sticky residue on the substrate. Laser mask films do not leave a residue, are durable for deep carving and color-fill applications, come in a wide format, burn clean, and are easy to apply.
